Requirements to work in the UK

To work in the UK, you must either hold a valid UK or EU passport OR apply for the right visa or work permit. Hospital Recruitment International Ltd will be able to assist you in this.

Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holiday Visa is available to Commonwealth citizens under the age of 31 years. Generally your work in the UK must be "incidental" or secondary to your holiday. However there are some exceptions relating to the health field, which we can inform
you about.

  • You should be able to prove that you can support and accommodate yourself during
    your stay.
  • You will need to show you have the means to pay your inward journey.
  • You will also need to prove that you mean to leave the UK at the end of your holiday.
  • You must apply for a Working Holiday Visa from your country of origin, as this cannot be applied for once in the UK.

Dual nationality

A dual passport is required showing that you hold a passport from a UK or EU country as well as a passport from your country of origin.

UK Ancestry Visa*

You can apply for a UK Ancestry Visa if you are a Commonwealth citizen and can establish that you have a Grandparent who was born in the UK before March 1922. A UK Ancestry Visa will allow you to stay in the UK for a period of 4 years.

*Various other conditions may be attached to this visa.

Right of Abode

A Right of Abode means you can enter the UK without any restrictions. The British High Commission in your country will determine whether or not you are entitled to a Certificate for the Right of Abode.

Spouses

Marriage to a UK or EU national or a spouse holding a dual passport or a work permit for the UK, allows you to apply for a spousal visa.

Work permit or sponsorship

A Work permit or sponsorship enables Commonwealth citizens aged over 31 years old to be sponsored by UK- based employers for a length of up to 5 years. If at any time other employment is sought then a new permit has to be applied for by your new employer.
